Developing a flexible editorial language for an independent magazine rooted in an international skateboarding community.

Role and Responsibilities

As freelance Art Director, I took creative ownership of selected editorial projects, including the complete visual direction of a publication issue. My work covered editorial structure, typography, image treatment, layout systems and the translation of individual stories into a coherent publication.

Problem Statement and Goals

The magazine needed enough visual consistency to establish a recognizable identity while allowing photographers, contributors and individual stories to retain their own character. The goal was therefore not to impose a rigid template, but to build an editorial framework capable of responding to very different material.

Design Process and Methodology

I developed the publication through close engagement with photography, sequencing, typography and pacing, treating the magazine as a complete narrative rather than a collection of individual layouts. Flexible editorial rules provided continuity while allowing the visual treatment to change according to the content.

Key Challenges and Solutions

Independent editorial work often involves heterogeneous material, changing inputs and limited production constraints. Instead of forcing every contribution into the same visual treatment, I used hierarchy, rhythm and recurring structural elements to create coherence across the publication.

Outcomes and Learnings

The resulting magazine combined a recognizable editorial voice with enough flexibility to reflect the culture and contributors behind it. The project remains an important part of my practice because it demonstrates how systems and strong art direction can coexist without reducing individuality.
